Jan van Huysum
(Apr.15, 1682 Amsterdam - Feb.8, 1749 Amsterdam) Dutch Oil Painting Artist Biography.
Jan Van Huysum was born and bred in Amsterdam, he established himself as one of the best flower oil painters in the Netherlands learning his craft from his father. He also painted landscape oil paintings, but was most famous for creating painstakingly detailed and realistic flower and fruit still lifes in oil which commanded princely sums from a number of European royal courts. He was also something of an artistic pioneer, being the first to use light oil paints on an even lighter background, became distinguishing features of 18th century Dutch flower painting. He kept his techniques well-guarded and reluctantly took on only one student, despite his secrecy his artwork and oil painting style was imitated widely.
Unlike most Dutch still life painters, Jan van Huysum insisted on working from life and close study of his subjects. He once wrote to a patron to explain that her oil painting would be delayed a year because, he could not find a real yellow rose, so he could not finish the painting. Called by his contemporaries "the phoenix of all flower painters."
The profuse bouquets, that won Van Huysum an international reputation included flowers from all seasons, arranged with elegance and seeming spontaneity in various states of bloom and demise. Eager collectors often paid more than a thousand Guilders for them. He intended to instruct as well as delight. While viewers could contemplate the transience of flowers, their beauty was also a call to faith, as he pointed out by inscribing this Bible verse on a flower jar: "Consider the lilies of the field, Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these." His father, Justus the Elder (1659-1716), was a flower and landscape oil painter and he had three artist brothers: Justus the Younger (1684-1707) Michiel (d.1759) and Jacob (1687-1740), who worked in England and imitated Jan's style.
It is doubtful whether any artist ever surpassed Jan van Huysum in painting fruit and flowers. Van Huysum, shows supreme art in arranging flowers of various colors against each other and often against a light and transparent background. No public museum has finer and more numerous oil paintings of his than The Louvre, which boasts four landscapes and six still life oil paintings.
