Ignace Henri Jean Théodore Fantin-Latour

Ignace Henri Jean Theodore Fantin-Latour grew up in Paris where he studied painting with his father and later worked in the studio of Lecoq de Boisbaudran, but it was the old masters in the Louvre that really formed Fantin's taste. He spent years diligently studying and copying the works of Delacroix, Hals, Rubens and the Venetians. From 1853 onwards he regularly copied works by the old masters in the Louvre and in the Musée du Luxembourg and for 12 years lived mainly by copying oil paintings.
He is best known for his luxurious flower pieces but he also painted several group portraits that are important historical documents and show his friendship with leading avant-garde artists. Homage to Delacroix (1864, Musée d'Orsay, Paris) shows Fantin-Latour himself, with Baudelaire, Edouard Manet, Whistler and others grouped around a portrait of Eugene Delacroix and A Studio at Batignolles, sometimes called Homage to Manet (1870, Musée d'Orsay, Paris) shows Claude Monet, Pierre Auguste Renoir and others in Manet's studio. Despite artistic differences, the contemporaries featured in his portrait oil paintings, it is to his credit that we know what many of these literary and artistic persons of the time looked like.
In spite of his associations with such progressive artists, Fantin-Latour gradually withdrew from this active society to paint group portraits and still life's in his own conservative style. His method of handling paint produced an overall effect of mysterious distance, nearly photographic in its realistic rendering of texture and color. Fantin-Latour was a traditionalist, and his portraits particularly are in a precise, detailed style. His work strongly influenced the Symbolist movement of the late 19th Century. Today, one of his paintings can sell for as much as US$2.5 million.
